A Thousand Older New Yorkers to Gather in Foley Square in Honor of National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day

New York, NY – Movement is medicine, and for older New Yorkers, staying active is one of the most powerful ways to age well. As part of its commitment to healthy aging, the NYC Department for the Aging (NYC Aging) will – for the second year in a row – host on May 28, 2025, a National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day event at Foley Square. The event will highlight the importance of staying physically active as we age and promote year-round wellness opportunities available to residents at older adult centers across the city.

More than 1,000 older adults are expected to participate in two movement-based classes. The first class will focus on bend-and-stretch exercises designed to improve flexibility and mobility, and range of motion, supporting older adults in maintaining independence and performing everyday activities. Following this, participants will engage in a laughter yoga session. This practice has been shown to reduce stress, alleviate feelings of social isolation and support both physical and emotional well-being.

Attendees will receive pom-poms and red noses to wear throughout the day, adding a festive and inclusive spirit to the event.
